2010 AWL® Summer Institute at the Banana Factory

What an amazing week at the Banana Factory. Local artist, Bill Christine took our color sensibilities to a new height! The group of artists/teachers were willing to take risks and expand their thinking, learning and creating. Here is a sample of their imaginative work! From exploring color, creating neutrals and values, collaborating with left over paint, to these amazing Klee Inspirations. Just a sample of some of their work during our highly productive week integrating the arts in the everyday life of the classroom.

I have never considered myself to be a good artist, but I was very proud of the art pieces that I created during our week long class! I learned a tremendous amount about color and was amazed at the number of colors we were able to create using only red, yellow, blue, and white. Most importantly, I also learned about the many different ways that art can be incorporated into the classroom in a deeper and more meaningful way. It was really neat to work with Bill and the many other talented artists in our class.

This is a great class. The range of images reflects the content as experienced through a diverse group of educators. This learning experience was well orchestrated by the instructors, thank you again!

WOW- HOW EXCITING IT IS FOR ME TO SEE MY ARTWORK ON THE WEBSITE!!!!
I FEEL A REAL SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT! THE WEEK WAS VERY CHALLENGING FOR ME, AS YOU WELL KNOW, BUT I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED WORKING WITH EVERYONE. EVERYONE WAS SO SUPPORTIVE OF MY EFFORTS. THE CHILDREN OF THOSE TEACHERS’ CLASSROOMS ARE VERY FORTUNATE. I AM VERY GLAD THAT I DECIDED TO TAKE THE AWL COURSE!

Who ever thought I’d enjoy painting? I certainly didn’t! Dr. P’s class was a rare combination of fun and purposeful learning–I couldn’t have had a better experience! From learning to mix neutrals (blue and orange can make khaki?!), to constructing Klee impressions and creating a class mural, I have walked away with not only a better understanding (and appreciation) for art, but also have tuned into my own creative process and can appreciate how my students are thinking. What a great way to spend a week of my summer–I’ll definitely feel more comfortable integrating the arts into my curriculum and seeking the professional assistance necessary for constructing art-filled, FUN units!

What a great class. AWL what a great philosophy. It is like a book you can’t put down, you just want more and more. All teachers would benefit from taking this course. Not only did i learn about art and how to integrate it into meaningful lessons. I learned i am an artist too. I never knew so many colors could come from such a small pallet. I learned the value of how art can be used for simple and more difficult concepts. Art can be used with all types of students regardless of academic or artistic knowledge. Teaching that includes art allows students to explore concepts using hands on method. The possibilities are endless. What a great class, still excited and exploring things at home in my free time. I am very excited to use what I leaned in the upcoming school year. I recommend this class to all, what a great learning experience. I just can’t say enough.
