Get Your ART On…

Arts in Education Week-September 12-18, 2010

On July 26, the U.S. House of Representatives declared a resolution designating the second week of September as “Arts in Education Week.” The resolution (H.Con.Res. 275) was proposed and introduced by Rep. Jackie Speier from California. Be sure to visit AEP’s website in the coming weeks for suggestions on observing and celebrating Arts in Education Week.

What will you plan for your ARTS in Education WEEK?  How will you thank an art, music, dance or drama teacher? 30 miles out to sea….

Today is the start of my summer holiday. It begins by looking out on a breezy pond in Plymouth, with purple buddelia and swaying grasses at a home of a friend. Tomorrow I board the ferry for Nantucket, which is 30 miles out to sea. This trip always brings such a flood of memories, little children, calm ponds, crashing waves, a special vow, painted furniture, local artists and their creative work galore! Mostly for me it is a time of reflection, energizing me for the academic year ahead. A time to think new thoughts, craft syllabi, plan imaginative explorations to guide beginning and advanced teachers and set an agenda for scholarship. The fog rolls in and lifts my spirit as it rolls out…renewed. The time also has become a gathering of adult children and friends. I love seeing them grow and make Nantucket their special place. Just know that I am thinking, dreaming, and imagining all of you here too!
